His The Mystery of Irma Vep is a self proclaimed “ridiculous penny dreadful.” The two person play with himself and his estranged lover, Everett Quinton, was a tremendous success playing to 331 performances. The Mystery of Irma Vep can be enjoyed on three levels: as pure entertainment, as literary wordplay, and as a testament to the outrageous sensibility of Charles Ludlam. With dozens of quick changes and lots of laughs, Irma Vep offers a different kind of holiday entertainment. His life was cut short by AIDS at 44. If you've ever seen and enjoyed a Hammer Horror or the Carry On team's take on them, the very (very) funny Carry On Screaming, then the chances are high that The Mystery of Irma Vep, now on at Edinburgh's Lyceum until 14 March, is for you. Playing every character in the production, McNicoll and Gray are on top form, bouncing off each other (and around the stage) like two schoolboys at their Christmas play. Such is the case, however, with next week's senior thesis performance of “The Mystery of Irma Vep” in the '92 Theater, starring Mark McCloughan '10 (it's his thesis) and Jaime Maseda '11.
